Pertinent Core Functions of the PCIS GOLD EHR

All posts

John Maeda once said, “Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.” At PCIS, we believe in doing just that.

Just over 20 years ago, we developed our first healthcare software package. Since then, we have worked tirelessly to refine it. We’ve continuously added functionality to ensure our system is indeed “meaningful” for each user. The result: The PCIS GOLD Single Source Solution.

The Single Source Solution includes our practice management (PM) and electronic health record (EHR) software. Unlike the PM, the EHR is clinical in nature. It documents all aspects of clinical visits, storing pertinent information that can be easily accessed by any provider.

As per the Institute of Medicine (IOM), our EHR includes these pertinent eight core functions:

  1. Health information data

The PCIS EHR gives you rapid access to specific patient data, such as diagnoses, allergies, medications, and test results. This offers you comprehensive medical histories to improve patient care.

Besides this, our EHR is designed with usability in mind. Our user-friendly interface can be custom-built by each provider, giving them the ability to streamline workflow.

  2. Results management

The PCIS GOLD EHR allows you to quickly access lab results to detect abnormal findings. Furthermore, it helps reduce redundant testing by automatically displaying previous lab findings.

Our system lets you share test results with patients and other providers, and it allows these results to be imported into your EHR. This automated results-sharing improves patient engagement and care coordination.

  3. Order management

With our computerized physician order entry (CPOE), you can order lab tests, prescription drugs, radiology, and even consults to improve workflow and reduce errors.

It can flag suspected duplicate orders and generate related orders automatically. This reduces the time to fill orders, thereby increasing patient satisfaction and care quality. It also eliminates the costs of producing and filing paper forms for orders and results.

In addition, the PCIS GOLD EHR offers electronic prescription drug orders to reduce medication errors. Our system flags medication doses or frequencies outside the recommended range, checks the proposed medication against the patient’s record, and creates alerts for potential allergies or interactions with existing medications. It can even check prescriptions against insurance formularies to ensure coverage.

  4. Decision support

Our EHR offers two major types of decision support:

    • Reminders and alerts: These flag potentially inappropriate medication doses or frequencies, trigger warnings about potential drug interactions, and create reminders to clinicians to provide appropriate preventive care screenings.
    • Computer-assisted diagnosis, treatment, and disease management tools: These sophisticated diagnostic tools help guide clinicians through the detection of complex conditions. They reduce the time it takes for a patient to receive a diagnosis and lessen the frequency of misdiagnosis. They also help busy clinicians provide guidelines-based care and flag treatment plans/orders that may not adhere to the latest clinical guidelines.
  5. Electronic communication and connectivity

Our EHR gives you faster, easier access to patient medical records and sharable data. You can easily improve care coordination by sharing data with other providers and patients themselves.

Our EHR has built-in electronic messaging, patient portals, and email connectivity to improve communication among providers and between providers and patients. This can help reduce duplicative testing and encourages patients to become more engaged in their care as they view lab results and schedule appointments from the comfort of their own homes.

  6. Patient support.

Patient education and support are essential elements of managing chronic conditions. Our EHR can help you provide appropriate and timely patient education. It can host a library of educational materials for easy access and generate follow-up instructions and treatment plans so patients know and understand their next steps. This can be accomplished through our patient portal.

  7. Administrative processes and reporting

The PCIS GOLD EHR can help your practice improve scheduling, billing, and claims management. It allows patients to make appointments electronically, without calling your office. It expedites electronic patient registration to reduce patient wait times and your staff’s data entry time.

Besides this, it streamlines billing and claims management practices by validating a patient’s insurance coverage for tests and medications, ultimately reducing coverage denials. It uses decision support tools to improve your practice’s adherence to guidelines-based care, leading to reduced claims denials and improved quality scores.

  8. Reporting and population health

The PCIS GOLD EHR stores and transmits clinical data about patient safety and disease surveillance to public health entities. Our reporting and population health management provide medical group practices with the ability to submit and receive immunization data from public health registries and immunization information systems. It also submits syndromic surveillance data from non-urgent care ambulatory settings for eligible providers (EPs).
